 Kevin Staton,

By Bill Schwenterly - KSOC President

The holidays are upon us and I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. It sure was great to have Black Friday stretched out to a week, with more or less normal traffic in the stores instead of the usual crowds! Jackson Hole opened on Thanksgiving, with Steamboat a couple of days later, and all the major New England areas are open if you're going north for the holidays. We had a nice afternoon and a great turnout on November 20 for the Stream Cleanup on the Ten mile Creek Greenway, see pics below. The December happy hours are on Friday, December 3 at Brother Wolf in the Old City, and on December 17th at Mind Yer Ps & Qs Beer and Wine Bar on Kingston Pike— details below. The Crescent Ski Council Spring Convention will be held in-person April 21-24, and will again be at Kingston Plantation in North Myrtle Beach. Signup details are below. Finally, we are looking for a volunteer to be Programs/Special Events Chairman to organize programs for our general meetings and other events of interest to KSOC members. Program Chairmen are members of the KSOC Board of Directors and receive complimentary Club dues. All it requires is attending monthly Board meetings and making a few phone calls and handling any needed logistical details for two or three events each year. See me or any other club officer at a happy hour if you are willing to help with this. Also, please let us know if you have ideas for programs or events.

Fourteen people came out on a beautiful day to clean up trash from the Ten Mile Creek Greenway. This is a popular paved path in West Knox County that is used by bikers, walkers, and runners of all ages. It is amazing how much trash accumulates along this path even though there are garbage receptables along the way. In just under 2 hours we filled about 14 large trash bags with various types of discarded material. There were three grocery carts in the creek which Knox County Parks and Rec was going to pick up the next day. We received many thanks from people using the path on Saturday.

Many thanks to fellow club members Adele Soucy, Tom Cressler, Carline Bryant, Sylvia Smith, Roger Kroll, Jason and Grace Hudson, Josephine Vaccaro, Bill Schwenterly, Robyn and George Ulrich, James Smith, Mary Anne Koltowich, Jeannine Dunn and her dog Maya.

Merry Christmas!  On Friday December 3rd, we are meeting at Brother Wolf, which was chosen as Knoxville's Pop Up Christmas Bar this year!  You may remember going to Sapphire's the past couple years for the Pop up Bar on Gay Street.  Sapphire's owner had to move due to renovations of the building; so he opened a new bar and restaurant in the Old City at 108 Jackson Avenue, (Bar - Brother Wolf, attached restaurant - Osteria Stella).  This is very popular, because they have many special Holiday Drinks, so we are starting arrival time at 4:30 PM.  Street parking and a parking lot across the street should be available.  You may want to stay a while, because this is the same night as the Knoxville Christmas Parade, which starts at 7pm near the Coliseum, turns right on Gay Street, right on Jackson , and goes past Brother Wolf.  If you are coming by Interstate 40 exit onto Hwy 158, and take W/James White Parkway to the Summit Hill Dr., and turn right on Central Ave.  Turn left on Jackson, and Brother Wolf is on the corner.  Cheers!

Our Christmas Party will be at "MIND YER Ps & Qs Beer and Wine Bar", Friday December 17th at 5:30 PM.  Located in the Renaissance Center in Farragut, 12744 Kingston Pike.  Yes, we went to this Center in September for a Happy Hour at Parrilla's Mexican Cantina, which is only two doors down.  If you come by Interstate 40. and exit on Watt Road going south to Kingston Pike; you turn left on Kingston Pike, and it is just 1.5 miles to the Renaissance Center off the road on the right.  This bar will have some Christmas back ground music, a soft music band starting around 7:30 pm, a menu of many appetizers, fish & chips, bangers & mash, pizza, large selection of wine & beer, plus other alcohol choices.  So, put on your sparkle, and come join us for a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Vaccination will be required for this activity. You may be asked to show proof of your vaccination status. Masking will be required indoors (except when actively eating or drinking) or when social distancing is not possible outside.

When KSOC calculates the cost of insurance, we do not include the price of the lift ticket. Lift tickets can be refunded prior to the trip. Also, lift ticket refunds are generally given if you become ill/injured on the trip AND seek medical care at the resort. What this means is the price you pay for your trip is not the price we insure.  Example: Total trip cost with lift ticket $2890.  We insure the trip for up to $2500 (Insurance is calculated in ranges of $500). This information applies particularly to those who are purchasing CFAR directly from Travel Protector (Myra Altschuler). We realize that this causes some confusion when you contact Myra. Myra always contacts us to find out what portion is insured. If you have questions, please contact Carole Mustaleski aat 865-414-5526 or email at skigalcarole@gmail.com for further explanation.

For the upcoming ski season, we will be trying something new for our local trips.  We'll be using the MeetUp app to coordinate our trips.  We're going to wait until a little closer to the trip date to announce a destination and exact date so we can be sure to get the best snow!

We are also looking to have at least one overnight or longer trip.  We are checking on a couple of destinations to see which will offer the best bang for the buck.

If you have friends that ski but are not members of the club, please encourage them to get the MeetUp app and join us on one of our local trips.  People are allowed to join us on one local trip before becoming members.

Start thinking about where you want to go for a local trip and let us know.  I'll be adding some polls to the website to get your input.

It'll be January 2022 in weeks, time to start making plans!!!

    KSOC Local Trips

The hike is sponsored by the Tennessee Trails Association and Knoxville Ski and Outing Club. This joint sponsorship of hikes has been to the benefit of both groups and provides more flexibility for hikes and leadership of the hikes.

The hike is described below – be sure to bring a facemask even if you have been vaccinated. We want to do everything we can to not catch the virus or to not spread it to our families and friends.

Dec 11 North Boundary Trail in Oak Ridge,  TN.  Join our group on this 6 + mile hike.  We'll touch on several different trails but they're all easy to moderate.   We'll pass through woodlands and see creekside habitats showcasing a variety of wildlife and natural plants as well as remnants of pre-Manhattan project settlements.   We'll see the quarry lake and old cemeteries too.  Let's meet at 9:00 am et in Oak Ridge in the parking area of Books A Million (closest to the outer perimeter).  From this area we can carpool a very short distance to the trailhead because there's limited parking.  Please preregister with our leader, Scott Adams at adamsscott1950@gmail.com.

NOTICE: Effective February 2, 2021, the NPS issued a statement about mask wearing, "Face masks are now required in all NPS buildings and facilities. Masks are also required on NPS-managed lands when physical distancing cannot be maintained, including narrow or busy trails, overlooks and historic homes."

The 2021 Back in Blue Rail Jam at Ober Gatlinburg Friday, November 19th was such a great way to kick off the Winter season! Fun was had by competitors and spectators as they enjoyed the first on the snow event of the season. Our own Mel Whaley, Jeannine Dunn, and Jackie Dutton were in attendance to enjoy the festivities and share information about the club with attendees. Ober Gatlinburg did an awesome job organizing the event and making the night fun for all. MC Paul Dunn engaged the crowd and competitors while DJ Justin kept the crowd pumped with upbeat jams. There was a bon fire and live music by Three Star Revival to end the evening. It was a great evening to catch up with all our friends!

    KSOC RACE TEAM 2021-2022

    By Ramon Davila

Racing for all age groups and all ability levels

Racers ready…GO!!!! The 2021-2022 race season will soon begin on December 18-19, 2021 at Appalachian Ski Resort! After last season’s second place finish (back-to-back), we are determined to take first place. Skier accomplishments from last year include our most improved racers (Addie Dorwin, Arie Groen, Sam and Thomas Moffat, Austin & Mason Noble, Dan Sansonetti, and Ramon Davila). Not to exclude Eli Dorwin and Todd Bishop, our two fastest skiers!! I highlight these facts as, IMHO, improving one’s ski skills is the best reason for participating with KSOC’s Race Team, along with the fun and team comradery.

Knoxville is poised for another great season and I am hoping that others will join us! We encourage all skiers from all abilities to join and help us win the Crescent Cup.  If you would like to qualify for Nationals, then you must do so by racing a National Qualifying run before mid-February!

We welcome skiers of all ages and abilities to come take part in our race clinics and race events! We have 5 regular season races every year before Nationals. Come join the KSOC race team and help us grow! We would especially invite young racers, beginner skiers, and families who have not been involved previously and of course all previous racers. Please spread the word as our team greatly depends on you and our other club members’ referrals.

Last year Ramon Davila accepted the position of as the Race Director. Ramon has a short history (< 3 years) in the sport of Downhill ski racing but has been active with skiing for the past 40 years, which included 5 yrs. as a ski patroller for Mt. Baldy Ski, CA and 4 yrs. as an Adaptive Ski Instructor at Snow Summit, CA. It was Franz Klammer’s 1976 Gold finish at Innsbruck who first captured Ramon’s imagination. His mother took him skiing for his high school graduation gift and he has been addicted ever since. Ramon (Navy Veteran) participated in the Military Ski Championships (4th place finish) in 1992 at Snoqualmie Pass in Washington state. We can certainly look forward to a year of strong leadership and opportunity this race season! If you would like to get involved with the race team, we would love to have you. Knoxville Ski and Snowboard Alpine Race Team races in the Crescent Ski Council Racing Program at Appalachian, Sugar, and Beech Ski Resorts.

There are lots of opportunities to be involved and every one of them will help you be a better skier or snowboarder, so why not come out and join your KSOC Race Team for some of them?  Contact Ramon Davila at info@knoxvilleskiclub.org for more info. We look forward to seeing you on the slopes!
