THE PREZ SAYS - JANUARY 2022 EDITIO
THE PREZ SAYS - JANUARY 2022 EDITION

By Bill Schwenterly - KSOC President

Happy New Year to all! I and the Board hope you had a great holiday season. Sadly, Steamboat had only a few runs open with mostly machine-made snow for the Race Camp trip in early December. Crescent is considering moving the dates of this trip a week later in the future. But now things are looking up, and Steamboat has nearly 60" total snowfall and 127 out of 169 trails open! For our other trips, Sun Valley has 74" at the top with 74 of 120 runs open, Winter Park got 19" last week with 85 out of 161 runs open, and Big Sky has over 2900 acres open with 11" snowfall the last week. There are still a few spaces left for Steamboat and Winter Park, but Big Sky has a wait list. Some of the local areas are open with machine-made snow. At this writing,, Ober Gatlinburg and Beech are still closed, Cataloochee has 4 of 18 trails open, and Sugar has 10 of 22 runs open. When Ober Gatlinburg is able to open, they will again offer their learn-to-ski/snowboard Winter Sports Discovery Program, as well as offering KSOC members discounts on season passes and day tickets. See below for details and links to their website. Local Trips Chairman Kevin Staton proposes to use the Meetup app to organize local ski trips on short notice. See his article belowKevin will be monitoring local ski and road conditions and will post local trip announcements on Meetup and the KSOC website. The January Happy Hours are scheduled for January 14 at Walk On's and January 28 at Finn's Irish Restaurant & Tavern, details are below. See also signup details on the Crescent Ski Council Spring Convention, which will be held in-person April 21-24, and will again be at Kingston Plantation in North Myrtle Beach. It's not too early to begin thinking about this!

CSC Announces Dates and Location for the 2022 Fall Conference – SAVE THE DATES

Friday, October 28 – Sunday, October 30, 2022 are our conference dates. While this is Halloween weekend, these are absolutely the best rates we can get when compared to other weekends. We are pleased to announce preliminary plans for our 2022 CSC Fall Conference. Once again, we will be at the Glenstone in Gatlinburg, TN. The standard room rate is $109 + taxes. This is only a $10 increase from past years and represents a huge discount from normal Glenstone rates. There maybe a few other type rooms available – Front Balcony, Junior Suite, and Executive Suite (sleeps 4 with two beds and two baths) depending on availability at reduced rates also. Be looking for details later on registration and schedule information. So hope we can get together and COVID is mostly behind us.

CALCULATION OF INSURED PRICE VS TRIP COST

When KSOC calculates the cost of insurance, we do not include the price of the lift ticket. Lift tickets can be refunded prior to the trip. Also, lift ticket refunds are generally given if you become ill/injured on the trip AND seek medical care at the resort. What this means is the price you pay for your trip is not the price we insure.  Example: Total trip cost with lift ticket $2890.  We insure the trip for up to $2500 (Insurance is calculated in ranges of $500). This information applies particularly to those who are purchasing CFAR directly from Travel Protector (Myra Altschuler). We realize that this causes some confusion when you contact Myra. Myra always contacts us to find out what portion is insured. If you have questions, please contact Carole Mustaleski aat 865-414-5526 or email at skigalcarole@gmail.com for further explanation.

LOCAL TRIPS

LOCAL TRIPS

By Kevin Staton

For the upcoming ski season, we will be trying something new for our local trips.  We'll be using the MeetUp app to coordinate our trips.  We're going to wait until a little closer to the trip date to announce a destination and exact date so we can be sure to get the best snow!

We are also looking to have at least one overnight or longer trip.  We are checking on a couple of destinations to see which will offer the best bang for the buck.

If you have friends that ski but are not members of the club, please encourage them to get the MeetUp app and join us on one of our local trips.  People are allowed to join us on one local trip before becoming members.

Start thinking about where you want to go for a local trip and let us know.  I'll be adding some polls to the website to get your input.

HIKING EVENT WITH TENNESSEE TRAILS

By Tom Cressler

The hike is sponsored by the Tennessee Trails Association and Knoxville Ski and Outing Club. This joint sponsorship of hikes has been to the benefit of both groups and provides more flexibility for hikes and leadership of the hikes.

The hike is described below – be sure to bring a facemask even if you have been vaccinated. We want to do everything we can to not catch the virus or to not spread it to our families and friends.

Jan 15 This hike will be at Whitestone Inn in Roane County.  We will start in the parking lot next to the church at Whitestone.   (Our usual place). On this hike, there will be rolling hills and not much elevation gain.  The total miles will be five or six at the most.   We will take a break in the middle of the hike if everyone wishes to.  Be sure to dress warmly since it will be really cold.

Meet at Food City in Loudon off Exit 72 on I-75.  If coming from Knoxville, take a left at Exit 72 and go two miles.  Food City parking lot is on the right.  Meet at 9:00 a.m.

---NOTICE: Effective February 2, 2021, the NPS issued a statement about mask wearing, "Face masks are now required in all NPS buildings and facilities. Masks are also required on NPS-managed lands when physical distancing cannot be maintained, including narrow or busy trails, overlooks and historic homes."

HOW TO HAVE FUN IN FRESH POW!

By Jeannine Dunn

The Southeast offers very few opportunities to ski in several inches or feet of snow, so when the opportunity arises to ski excess amounts of fresh deep powder, we often struggle and fall or wear ourselves out! I was determined to figure how to ski the powder so took a lesson in skiing powder at Schweitzer Ski Resort in Idaho. The instructor, a ski bum and definite hippy from the 60’s, led the small group of us. He demonstrated in effortless fashion how to navigate through what appeared to be some very challenging terrain and helped us be able to see how doable and fun it actually was, no matter how difficult it appeared. He taught us how to adapt our stance to the fluffy terrain and bounce into turns all the way down the mountain. We all followed his directions and in no time were able to float down the mountain with similar ease on the soft billowy snow. It was a totally gnarly experience!

So, in case you do not have a ski bum from the 60’s to show you how to ski, Ski Magazine offers great tips for skiers in their clinic section every issue. One article published last season offers four tips to help readers have more fun and float on the magical white stuff we love on a powder day!  The first tip is to adjust your turn shape. You do this by maintaining your speed and adjusting your turn shape to make your turns more open down the hill. The second tip is to bounce into your turns which makes it easier to change direction. The third tip is to adapt your stance. While on groomed terrain, we use our edges to grip the snow, but in powder you need to spread pressure more even to keep from driving yourself into the snow. The last tip is to be patient. If you put too much pressure on your skis in powder, you will only descend deeper into the snow and will need to work harder to stay afloat.

I hope these tips help you have more fun on powder day during your next trip!

Happy Skiing!
