COVID REQUIREMENTS FOR KSOC ACTIVITIES AND TRIPS
The COVID Delta Variant is spreading rapidly. In Knoxville alone the positivity rate is now at 22%. This is up from less than 3% on July 4th. Hospitalizations are up and reports indicate that approximately 95% of these admissions are among unvaccinated individuals. Most of those who are in the ICU and/or on a ventilator are unvaccinated people. We have no idea when this surge will end and whether there will be an additional surge in the future. Recognizing the importance of protecting our members and others we are adopting new protocols for all our club activities, including our distant trips and other club activities.
We are not alone in making difficult decisions. The Tennessee and Bijou Theaters as well as the Art Museum are requiring proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test within 72 hours of an event along with masking in the venue. Keep in mind, that the symphony sold season tickets, and now patrons are presented with adhering to the new protocols. This situation is happening everywhere. This is for your safety and that of others.
Please remember that distant trips are planned a year or more in advance when we have no idea what situations will occur. We sign up months before a distant trip trusting that all will go smoothly. When sign up started, it looked like COVID was declining. We did not foresee that the Delta variant would run rampant through the world and our own city.
In response to the changing environment the Knoxville Ski & Outing Club is instituting the following requirements for participation in our distant trips and other club activities.
This policy is subject to change as it will be based on the most recent CDC recommendations and destination requirements in the future.
The decision to require vaccinations for a distant trip is due to the fact that people will be residing in hotel rooms or condos together. A PCR test is only a snapshot in time. The individual’s infection status could change before or during the trip. Thus, the individual’s roommate would be subject to quarantine and possibly the entire group because there would have been close contact involved among the group. While the COVID vaccine is not a 100% guarantee that you will not be infected, it does provide significant protection against contracting the virus and preventing hospitalization.
This decision is not taken lightly.
For example: On the Beaver Creek trip in 2021 an individual had tested negative three days before the trip and became ill with COVID at the beginning of the week. As a result, all trip participants were banned from public areas of the hotel. Food could be delivered to the room but was left outside the door.
Vaccination by all participants will help to prevent this situation.

We are going to one of the most popular resorts in the United States, Steamboat! Steamboat has been dubbed "Ski Town USA" because it is home to so many Olympic athletes. Steamboat is also famous for its Champagne Powder®, lots of wonderful fluffy powdery snow!
Steamboat is one of the largest ski areas in the country and is also known for having one of the best ski schools in the country, and plenty of green and blue runs. If there are any beginner skiers out there, this is the trip for you! For the seasoned skier, you will have no trouble finding many challenging runs. Steamboat boasts 18 lifts, 169 trails and 2965 skiable acres. The longest run is over 3 miles! The terrain consists of 14% beginner runs, 42% intermediate and 44% expert slopes. Something for everyone! Other activities available include gondola rides, tubing, sleigh ride dinners, “first tracks,” outlaw mountain coaster, winter photography tours, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and hot springs.
We are flying to Hayden/Yampa Valley airport just a 40 minute shuttle to the mountain. Transfer to our condos will be via shared ride shuttle or private shuttle – to be determined. This will not include a grocery stop (Safeway and City Market provide grocery delivery services). The Bronze Tree has a complimentary on-call shuttle.
Our lodging will be at The Bronze Tree Condos which offer sweeping panoramic vistas of the Yampa Valley from every condo, combining awe-inspiring scenery and a ski-in/walk-out location. At the end of your ski day the Right-O-Way trail will take you back to the Bronze Tree. From the ground floor of Bronze Tree, it is a short walk across a parking lot to the slopes, where you can readily load any of the base area lifts to begin your day on the mountain. Amenities at Bronze Tree include Steamboat’s only indoor swimming pool, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, a sauna, sun deck and fitness center. Condo units have gas fireplaces for cozy, comfortable relaxation after a day of skiing. Bronze Tree offers six floors, all accessible by elevator, free ski lockers and an underground parking garage for anyone who has chosen to drive to Steamboat or has rented a car. Big Sky, Montana
“The Biggest Skiing in America”
March 12 – 19, 2022
Summit Hotel – 2 spaces (One air space available)
Double Occupancy $2890 per person and $4250 for private room
Five-day lift ticket included in price ($615 value)
Big Sky Resort is called the Biggest Skiing in America, due to the sensation of carving out turns on endless terrain under an expansive big sky, where crowds and traffic get left behind. Powder stashes can be found consistently throughout Big Sky due to the most consistent snowfall in the Northern American Rockies. There are more snow- covered acres to be found than skiers, with about two acres per skier on the busiest day, which means a safer, more liberating mountain experience. Float down a 2,000 vertical foot, powder filled bowl beneath Lone Peak; bob and weave through the Bavarian Forest; ride the Lone Peak Tram for a bird’s eye view of untamed wilderness. Big Sky Resort has 5,850 acres of mixed terrain and easy navigation. The 4,350 feet of vertical drop, runs up to six miles long and glades and bowls covered in 400-plus inches of annual snowfall make a day on the slopes something different for everyone. Cross country skiers can enjoy 85 km of trails at nearby Lone Mountain Ranch or Yellowstone National Park. Non-ski activities include zip lines, sno-go bikes, snowshoe tours, dog sledding, snowmobiling in Yellowstone and Big Sky, sleigh rides, and The Innocents Escape Room. Our ski in/out lodging is at the Summit Hotel at Big Sky, with two queen beds, double occupancy. Daily hot breakfast, comparable to the Huntley Lodge breakfast, is included. The Summit is a prime location in the heart of the Mountain Village Center, with in-hotel dining and shopping. Room renovations will debut for the 2021-22 winter season. The complex includes free WiFi and ski valet, a fitness center, laundry facility, and indoor/outdoor soaking pool. The Mountain Village has shops and restaurants available for your enjoyment. EPIC and Ikon PASSES are now on sale and we would like to help you get the best value for your money.
How can you do that?
The DTC has finalized contracts for three 2022 ski trips at resorts, all of which are on the Ikon PASS. You definitely want to consider purchasing the Ikon pass if you plan to go on more than one KSOC ski trip to an Ikon affiliated resort. You might also want to consider buying one if you plan to go on a non-ski club sponsored trip, as the PASS rates have a good chance of being more economical than a daily walk-up rate at a resort. For example, this year at Deer Valley, the walk-up rate was $229 per day. If you bought the base Ikon Pass for $729 (2021-22 price), you could ski 5 days at Deer Valley and at least 5 days at 43 other destinations for less than the walk-up price for 5 days at Deer Valley. In addition, pass holders receive a 15% discount on food, beverages, and retail purchases at many of the resorts. Preferred pricing is also available on lodging.
To help in making a decision about a pass, we have put together some examples from the 2020-2021 season for daily rate tickets and club group rate tickets. Have a look at these and see what a great advantage a season pass is. Ikon and EPIC passes are here to stay! Even if you only take one ski trip on your own you may well save money with one of these passes.
Examples of daily rates from the 2020-2021 season:
Beaver Creek - $218
Crested Butte - $134
Steamboat - $129-219
Winter Park - $ 149-210
Big Sky - $170-190
Examples of the 2021-2022 5-day group pass rates quoted to KSOC:
Winter Park Resort - $370
Steamboat Resort - $456
Big Sky Resort - $615
Buy your pass through a dedicated KSOC link at Sports America Tours (SAT)! Even if you do not plan to go on club sponsored ski trips, you will get the same perks as you would if you purchase the pass through ikonpass.com and a perk from SAT. If you plan to go on a club sponsored trip, you will get all the IKON Pass perks and a discount on the club’s trip price! You have until May 5th to get the best rates on the IKON pass. There are a few black out days so be sure to check the information about each resort before making your decision about the Ikon Base Pass and the Full Ikon Pass or to see which pass product covers the resort you are interested in.
