DISTANT TRIPS

Exciting News from KSOC Distant Trip Committee!

The IKON Pass for the 2021-2022 ski season is currently on sale and we would like to help you get the best value for your money. How can you do that?

The DTC is currently finalizing contracts for three 2022 ski trips at resorts, all of which are on the IKON PASS.  You definitely want to consider purchasing the IKON pass if you plan to go on more than one KSOC ski trip to an IKON affiliated resort. You might also want to consider buying one if you plan to go on a non-ski club sponsored trip, as the PASS rates have a good chance of being more economical than a daily walk-up rate at a resort.  For example, this year at Deer Valley, the walk-up rate is $229 per day.  If you bought the base IKON Pass for $729 (2021-22 price), you could ski 5 days at Deer Valley and at least 5 days at 43 other destinations for less than the walk-up price for 5 days at Deer Valley.  In addition, pass holders receive a 15% discount on food, beverages, and retail purchases at many of the resorts.  Preferred pricing is also available on lodging.

To help in making a decision about a pass, we have put together some examples from the 2020-2021 season for daily rate tickets and club group rate tickets.   Have a look at these and see what a great advantage a season pass is.  IKON and EPIC passes are here to stay!  Even if you only take one ski trip on your own you may well save money with one of these passes.

Examples of daily rates for the 2020-2021 season:

Beaver Creek - $218

Crested Butte - $134

Steamboat - $129-219

Winter Park - $ 149-210

Big Sky - $170-190

Examples of the 2021 5-day group pass rates quoted to KSOC:

Beaver Creek - $590

Crested Butte - $368

Steamboat - $ 458

Buy your pass through a dedicated KSOC link at Sports America Tours (SAT)! Even if you do not plan to go on club sponsored ski trips, you will get the same perks as you would if you purchase the pass through ikonpass.com and a perk from SAT.  If you plan to go on a club sponsored trip, you will get all the IKON Pass perks and a discount on the club’s trip price! You have until the May 18 to get the best rates on the IKON pass.  There are a few black out days so be sure to check the information about each resort before making your decision.

Stay tuned! We will be announcing the club’s 2022 destinations and dates soon!

Distant Trips 2020-2021

Your distant trip committee has been meeting to plan for Knoxville Ski and Outing Club trips for the season 2020-2021. We realize that we are in uncharted waters and great uncertainty about what will happen next ski season. As I said earlier this month, your Distant Trip Committee is not alone in planning for next season. Other clubs are also, as is the Crescent Ski Council. If we do not plan and everything works out as we all hope it will next season – that COVID-19 is less of a threat or completely out of the picture - it will be very difficult to secure lodging and air accommodations for the trips.

We have been able to negotiate contracts with cancellation dates of September 14, 2020 (Morzine), and dates ranging from late October to late November for the other trips. Under these contracts we can cancel the trip in its entirety by these dates if things do not look promising for travel or we do not foresee selling the minimum number of spaces on the trips.  KSOC will receive a full refund from SAT and our European Tour Operator Alpine Adventures.

Full Disclosure:  Sports America Tours (SAT)  has added a clause that if KSOC cancels 89 days or less prior to travel due to government directive, travel restrictions due to additional COVID-19 outbreaks or other unforeseen national circumstances, an administrative fee of $60 per person booked will be retained by SAT from any refunds negotiated from Suppliers. This is in addition to fees imposed by contracted suppliers such as lodging properties, airlines, etc. I spoke with Sara Clemons at length about this situation. She stated that this season the resorts either gave a full refund or full credit for a trip another season. The Distant Trip Committee decided that this was a small amount of money to cover SAT’s efforts at recouping club funds from all the suppliers. The contracts were signed with this clause in effect. What this means for you is that should we have to cancel the trip 89 days or less before the trip, you will receive $60 less of whatever funds Sports America Tours is able to negotiate.

To minimize loss, we will not purchase the Regular (NOT Cancel For Any Reason) Travel Insurance plan until we are certain that the trip will occur. However, to cover preexisting conditions it must be purchased prior to your final payment.  THAT MEANS THAT WE DO NOT WANT YOU TO PAY IN FULL WHEN YOU SIGN UP BUT WAIT UNTIL WE ARE CERTAIN THAT THE TRIP WILL OCCUR. This policy does not cover pandemics, acts of declared or undeclared war, suicide and other situations.

For approximately 50% more than the insurance premium covered in the trip price you can purchase a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy that will allow you to cancel your trip for ANY REASON. We will make that available as an individual add-on cost to the trip. The cancellation must be made at least 48 hours before the commencement of the trip. A CFAR policy will reimburse the policyholder for up to 75% of the prepaid nonrefundable trip cost. The Travel Insurance plan included in the cost of the trip does not cover CFAR. It also does not cover pandemics, acts of declared or undeclared war, suicide and other situations. We are willing to provide details regarding the limits of coverage to you and contact the insurance agent at Travel Protectors if there are any questions regarding coverage.  Ask your trip leader or contact Sara Clemons at SAT for the additional cost.

Complete trip information follows.

Join the Knoxville Ski Club and Crescent Ski Council on a trip to Telluride, one of the world’s most beautiful ski resorts with peaks soaring to 14,000. Nestled in the towering San Juans, Telluride offers both downhill and cross-country skiing during the winter season.  Take time to enjoy the area’s history and beauty at the Telluride Historical Museum and Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado’s longest free falling falls.

Telluride is the county seat and most populous town of San Miquel County.  Telluride is actually two towns – the Mountain Village developed for skiing and the historice town of Telluride.  They are joined by a free gondola so that you can enjoy both parts of Telluride.  The town of Telluride, founded in 1878, is the site of a former silver mining camp along the San Miquel River. The area’s mines provided zing, lead, copper, silver and gold ores for many years.

As for skiing, you will have 2,000+ skiable acres.  The resort has suitable terrain for novices to experts.  There is no shortage of slopes to keep the adrenaline flowing.  And when your skiing day is over you can head to the many restaurants and bars for an evening of fun.  And if fine dining in the middle of the day is something you yearn for, try out Alpino Vino, the highest fine dining restaurant in the United States.

For more information about Telluride go to:  https://www.tellurideskiresort.com

This is a Crescent Ski Council organized trip.  Complete trip information can be found on the Crescent Ski Council Website at crescentskicouncil.org.  You will find the lodging options, pricing and what is included in the trip price on this site.

You may sign up for this trip at:   http://csc20te.sat.tours/1700

KSOC Group Leader:  To be announced at a later date.

Land Only spaces will not be approved until a minimum of 10 Full Packages have been purchased for a specific trip.  This is due to airlines requiring a minimum of ten people travelling together using Group Air.

Knoxville Ski and Outing Club heads to Beaver Creek, Colorado to experience a luxurious and upscale resort with world class skiing, fabulous dining, and breathtaking views. From the gentle, manicured slopes of Bachelor Gulch to the open intermediate trails of Larkspur and Rose Bowl, to the steep bumps of Grouse Mountain, skiers and riders of all abilities will feel at home at Beaver Creek where you will find long and meticulously groomed terrain. Over half of the 1,832 acres of Beaver Creek terrain is rated beginner to intermediate. Every type of terrain is available at Beaver Creek – from designated beginner areas to regions that will challenge even the most experienced skiers. Fifteen lifts (gondolas, high speed quads and more) will whisk you up the mountain so that you can enjoy your skiing days rather than standing in lift lines. You will enjoy legendary service, unmatched skiing and the intimacy and relation of one of the best mountain towns in the West. Besides alpine skiing, you can enjoy cross country skiing, snowshoeing, shopping, ice skating and more. And remember, don’t miss the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies every day at 3:00 in Beaver Creek Village and at the base of the Centennial lift. There is something for everyone, even those who do not ski. Beaver Creek is hoping to have a new area called McCoy Park open for 2021. McCoy Park will be centered in a tranquil and serene environment providing welcoming green and blue terrain in an idyllic environment and is to be served by two new lifts. We can only hope that this will actually happen for 2021.

Beaver Creek’s resort center is a quaint European-style village constructed of stone and natural wood architecture nestled at the base of the ski area. Fantastic lodging, dining, and shopping can be found on the tiered outdoor walkways which surround a large open-air ice rink. Heated sidewalks make walking in the village pleasant. From the village the slopes are only a convenient escalator ride away.

Our lodging will be at The Charter at Beaver Creek – a European-style lodge and condominium property in the heart of Beaver Creek with ski in/ski out slope access or complimentary shuttle to the slopes. The Charter is within walking distance of the Beaver Creek village. You will enjoy the services of a fine hotel, with access to a 24-hour front desk, concierge, bell staff, indoor lap pool, hot tubs, game room, and health club with full-service spa. There are two restaurants and a lounge.  Charter Sports are located on site for state-of-the-art ski and snowboard rentals.  NOTE:  Specific bed sizes (kings, queens, twins) can be requested but are NOT guaranteed.

Crested Butte mountain is a solitary and dramatic beauty towering above the Victorian and eclectic western town of Crested Butte lying peacefully at its base. Crested Butte has over 1500 acres of skiable terrain served by 15 lifts with an uphill capacity of over 20,000 skiers per hour and additional back country terrain.   Mount Crested Butte is known for its advanced and expert terrain but there is plenty of intermediate and beginner terrain for everyone’s enjoyment – 14% beginner, 25% intermediate, 25% advanced, and 36% Expert. The Teocalli Bowls offer extreme skiing for those most adventurous. Enjoy 2,775 feet of lift-served vertical drop (3,062 feet with the Peak hike) with views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Crested Butte is often referred to as Colorado’s last great ski town with its friendly locals, lack of traffic lights, chain restaurants and unique western charm. Join your fellow KSOC members to find adventure in an unspoiled setting surrounded by majestic peaks, wide valleys and being connected to the culture that is uniquely Crested Butte. Crested Butte is now a member of Vail Resorts with Epic Season passes. (Be sure to buy your Epic Passes through Sports America Tours for discounts (available only via KSOC).

In addition to downhill skiing there are opportunities for Cross Country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice skating, winter horseback trail rides, fat biking, and winter ziplining. Visit the historic mining town of Crested Butte (just a ten minute free shuttle ride away) where you will find some of the most diverse bars, restaurants and nightlife found in any ski town – sushi, pizza, sandwiches, and many bars. Enjoy live music almost every night somewhere in town – such as the intimate Princess wine bar or the classic Eldo Bar. You can taste delicious elk and buffalo at the historic Wooden Nickel. Take some time to shop in the small specialty shops and galleries located along the town’s streets. Even a trip into town can be an adventure in the colorful shuttle busses. There is a real community in Crested Butte which makes it feel different than many ski resorts in the west. Real people live, work and play here.  They also welcome visitors.

Fully equipped kitchens and daily housekeeping will make you feel at home. Most units have a wood burning or electric fireplace.
