DISTANT TRIPS

Distant Trips 2020-2021

Your distant trip committee has been meeting to plan for Knoxville Ski and Outing Club trips for the season 2020-2021. We realize that we are in uncharted waters and great uncertainty about what will happen next ski season. As I said earlier this month, your Distant Trip Committee is not alone in planning for next season. Other clubs are also, as is the Crescent Ski Council. If we do not plan and everything works out as we all hope it will next season – that COVID-19 is less of a threat or completely out of the picture - it will be very difficult to secure lodging and air accommodations for the trips.

We have been able to negotiate contracts with cancellation dates of September 14, 2020 (Morzine), and dates ranging from late October to late November for the other trips. Under these contracts we can cancel the trip in its entirety by these dates if things do not look promising for travel or we do not foresee selling the minimum number of spaces on the trips.  KSOC will receive a full refund from SAT and our European Tour Operator Alpine Adventures.

Full Disclosure:  Sports America Tours (SAT)  has added a clause that if KSOC cancels 89 days or less prior to travel due to government directive, travel restrictions due to additional COVID-19 outbreaks or other unforeseen national circumstances, an administrative fee of $60 per person booked will be retained by SAT from any refunds negotiated from Suppliers. This is in addition to fees imposed by contracted suppliers such as lodging properties, airlines, etc. I spoke with Sara Clemons at length about this situation. She stated that this season the resorts either gave a full refund or full credit for a trip another season. The Distant Trip Committee decided that this was a small amount of money to cover SAT’s efforts at recouping club funds from all the suppliers. The contracts were signed with this clause in effect. What this means for you is that should we have to cancel the trip 89 days or less before the trip, you will receive $60 less of whatever funds Sports America Tours is able to negotiate.

To minimize loss, we will not purchase the Regular (NOT Cancel For Any Reason) Travel Insurance plan until we are certain that the trip will occur. However, to cover preexisting conditions it must be purchased prior to your final payment.  THAT MEANS THAT WE DO NOT WANT YOU TO PAY IN FULL WHEN YOU SIGN UP BUT WAIT UNTIL WE ARE CERTAIN THAT THE TRIP WILL OCCUR. This policy does not cover pandemics, acts of declared or undeclared war, suicide and other situations.

For approximately 50% more than the insurance premium covered in the trip price you can purchase a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy that will allow you to cancel your trip for ANY REASON. We will make that available as an individual add-on cost to the trip. The cancellation must be made at least 48 hours before the commencement of the trip. A CFAR policy will reimburse the policyholder for up to 75% of the prepaid nonrefundable trip cost. The Travel Insurance plan included in the cost of the trip does not cover CFAR. It also does not cover pandemics, acts of declared or undeclared war, suicide and other situations. We are willing to provide details regarding the limits of coverage to you and contact the insurance agent at Travel Protectors if there are any questions regarding coverage.  Ask your trip leader or contact Sara Clemons at SAT for the additional cost.

Get on the Ski Wagon!

Join the Knoxville Ski and Outing Club for a

Memorable Ski Trip in 2021

We have three FANTASTIC trips planned for the 2020-21 Ski Season despite Covid! Don’t miss out on the Snow! Sign up now to enjoy the skiing, fun and excitement with other KSOCers.  We are taking a positive attitude that all trips will be a “go,” and want to have you traveling with us. This article provides important information so that you will be able to make an informed decision.

There is still much concern about COVID 19 and whether it will even be safe to travel come January, February, or March. That is why the Distant Trips committee has developed a contingency plan with Sports America’s assistance. This contingency plan allows the trip to be canceled and receive a full refund 90 or 120 days out from departure. But…people need to sign up for the trip of their choice or we may have to cancel for lack of interest.

If we must cancel a trip at 90 or 120 days out, KSOC will receive a full refund. That means you will get your money back! We, of course, want the trips to occur, and we will take into consideration the impact of COVID 19 as we approach these dates and reach out to the participants to determine whether the trip is a “go for all or a go for some.” If you have not signed up by the deadline for each trip given at the end of this article, the club might have to cancel a trip if an insufficient number of people sign up. If enough people sign up to meet group requirements, you can then sign up after the deadline date. Our intent is not to be negative but to have you, our members, understand that our situation is different this year. Having the opportunity to cancel with a refund makes it important for people to sign up early so we can make an informed decision at our “cancel with full refund deadline.”

The ski industry is making plans for increased distancing in lift lines and on ski lifts, decreasing congestion in food concession areas and adding more outside eating areas. Vail Resorts (in KSOC’s case, Beavercreek and Crested Butte) has decided to limit the number of skiers on their mountains in a variety of ways.

  • ·      Requiring advance reservations for any ski day.
  • ·      Priority will be given to Epic Pass holders.
  • ·      No priority at this time for people staying in resort lodging or holding group lift tickets from Tour Operators.
  • ·      How Group Lift Tickets will fit in the new Vail plan is unknown.
  • ·      People/family groups holding Epic Passes (any type) can request 7 Priority Ski Days between Nov 6th and Dec. 7th for any ski season dates.
  • ·      Lift tickets (single, SWAF and Buddy tickets) will go on sale Dec. 8th.
  • ·      No walk-up ticket sales. All purchases must be done on-line or through a resort call center. All based on availability. Pick up at resort ticket window.

Skiers without Epic Passes may have a harder time logging those ski miles this coming ski season, but Vail Resorts has Epic Day Passes which are a good value.

  • ·       Purchase 1 to 7 days depending upon how many days you plan to ski.
  • ·       For Beaver Creek, you can purchase a 5 day non holiday Epic Day Pass for $506 (less than our 5-day group rate) until Vail Resorts stops EPIC Pass sales or raises prices (dates unknown)
  • ·       If you have ordered/paid for a group lift ticket from SAT you will receive a refund for that amount if you purchase an Epic Pass.
  • ·       You will receive a $20 credit on your club trip if pass purchased at the following site:   www.sportsamerica.com/epic-crescent

The following information is intended to communicate what happens to Epic pass holders. Carole has spoken with a Vail Resorts representative and with our Tour Operator.

·      If a resort is not operating at the time of the trip, then a full refund will be given.

·      A credit will be given for other COVID restrictions – quarantine required if traveling from another state or lodging closed due to county limiting rentals.

·      If you cannot get mountain access for the days that you want, you can get a refund.

·       If KSOC cancels one of our trips, a credit can be obtained.

·      All credits and refunds will only be given for unused passes.

Complete Vail Resort information can be found at http://news.vailresorts.com/corporate/vailresorts/winter-operating-plan-2020-letter.htm

Crested Butte is a slightly different situation. Sports America will be able to sell group tickets to trip participants at the price of $368 for 5 days. It is uncertain how this will fit in the priority system since Crested Butte is a Vail Resort property. Since these new rules just came out at the beginning of September wholesale ticket sales have not been addressed. It is unknown how these ticket spaces would be reserved.

Alterra resorts (Steamboat) will honor group lift tickets purchased from a vendor (SAT). Those group tickets will not require an individual to make a reservation but will automatically be counted in the mountain's total skiers each day.  Sports America (SAT) is working with the resort to see if the IKON passes can be counted that way as well.  SAT will let us know if individuals with IKON passes must make reservations for their ski days.  We will pass that information on to you.

Yes, this Upcoming ski season has been challenging during planning and now sign ups! Let’s dream, scheme and for a moment, imagine making tracks down some newly fallen snow path! With that snow-filled picture in your mind, live that dream and go to the following links at the Sports America website to sign up️ ️! Secure your spot.

Starting Price is $1740 p.p. Land Only

Airfare is not included in this price

Sign Up deadline is October 10, 2020

Join the Knoxville Ski Club and Crescent Ski Council on a trip to Telluride, one of the world’s most beautiful ski resorts with peaks soaring to 14,000. Nestled in the towering San Juans, Telluride offers both downhill and cross-country skiing during the winter season.  Take time to enjoy the area’s history and beauty at the Telluride Historical Museum and Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado’s longest free falling falls.

Telluride is the county seat and most populous town of San Miquel County.  Telluride is actually two towns – the Mountain Village developed for skiing and the historice town of Telluride.  They are joined by a free gondola so that you can enjoy both parts of Telluride.  The town of Telluride, founded in 1878, is the site of a former silver mining camp along the San Miquel River. The area’s mines provided zing, lead, copper, silver and gold ores for many years.

As for skiing, you will have 2,000+ skiable acres.  The resort has suitable terrain for novices to experts.  There is no shortage of slopes to keep the adrenaline flowing.  And when your skiing day is over you can head to the many restaurants and bars for an evening of fun.  And if fine dining in the middle of the day is something you yearn for, try out Alpino Vino, the highest fine dining restaurant in the United States.

For more information about Telluride go to:  https://www.tellurideskiresort.com

This is a Crescent Ski Council organized trip.  Complete trip information can be found on the Crescent Ski Council Website at crescentskicouncil.org.  You will find the lodging options, pricing and what is included in the trip price on this site.

Fantastic lodging, dining, and shopping can be found on the tiered outdoor walkways which surround a large open-air ice rink. Heated sidewalks make walking in the village pleasant. From the village the slopes are only a convenient escalator ride away.

Crested Butte mountain is a solitary and dramatic beauty towering above the Victorian and eclectic western town of Crested Butte lying peacefully at its base. Crested Butte has over 1500 acres of skiable terrain served by 15 lifts with an uphill capacity of over 20,000 skiers per hour and additional back country terrain.   Mount Crested Butte is known for its advanced and expert terrain but there is plenty of intermediate and beginner terrain for everyone’s enjoyment – 14% beginner, 25% intermediate, 25% advanced, and 36% Expert. The Teocalli Bowls offer extreme skiing for those most adventurous. Enjoy 2,775 feet of lift-served vertical drop (3,062 feet with the Peak hike) with views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Crested Butte is often referred to as Colorado’s last great ski town with its friendly locals, lack of traffic lights, chain restaurants and unique western charm. Join your fellow KSOC members to find adventure in an unspoiled setting surrounded by majestic peaks, wide valleys and being connected to the culture that is uniquely Crested Butte. Crested Butte is now a member of Vail Resorts with Epic Season passes. (Be sure to buy your Epic Passes through Sports America Tours for discounts (available only via KSOC).

In addition to downhill skiing there are opportunities for Cross Country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice skating, winter horseback trail rides, fat biking, and winter ziplining. Visit the historic mining town of Crested Butte (just a ten minute free shuttle ride away) where you will find some of the most diverse bars, restaurants and nightlife found in any ski town – sushi, pizza, sandwiches, and many bars. Enjoy live music almost every night somewhere in town – such as the intimate Princess wine bar or the classic Eldo Bar. You can taste delicious elk and buffalo at the historic Wooden Nickel. Take some time to shop in the small specialty shops and galleries located along the town’s streets. Even a trip into town can be an adventure in the colorful shuttle busses. There is a real community in Crested Butte which makes it feel different than many ski resorts in the west. Real people live, work and play here.  They also welcome visitors.

Our lodging will be in the Plaza Condominiums located 100 yards from the main mountain lift – Silver Queen. Here you will enjoy condominium convenience with a hotel like setting. Fully equipped kitchens and daily housekeeping will make you feel at home. Most units have a wood burning or electric fireplace. There is a spacious lobby, restaurant and bar, and indoor/outdoor hot tubs for your enjoyment. We will stay in 2 BR/2BA and 3BR/3BA units with double occupancy per bedroom.
